It’s not quite time for Back to School and it’s getting too hot to play outside all day long.
Here is our list of fun activities to engage kids and keep them occupied during their last month of summer vacation.
Indoor Classics: blowing and chasing bubbles, Simon Says, Musical Chairs (you can use cushion too), Indoor hopscotch (use colourful masking tape), Dancing Statues.
Hide & Seek: Hide your child’s favourite collection of toys (ex: paw patrol or ty stuffies) all around the house and have them search for them. When they find one have them bring it back to a home base before they run off to find the next one.
Spider Webs: Take some wool, yarn, or twine and tie it around a piece of furniture then thread, twist and tie it all round the room and get your little “spiders” to crawl up and over and through all the webs.
Timed Scavenger Hunt: Make a list of items for your child to find but make it a challenge. Use descriptions like “something with strips” or “something red”. See who can find the most items in a set time.
Cozy Reading: Remember the books you loved as a kid? Share these with your children and discuss what makes them so special to you. Ask them which books they find special and have them share their picks with you.
Art Studio: Bring out your child’s inner artist by setting up an arts and craft activity table. Set up a craft that you purchased or just set up something free form by putting out different coloured papers, markers, pencil crayons, paints, stickers and any other crafty ingredients.
Global Tourist: Make some homemade passports with the kids. Write some places from around the world that you would like to visit. Choose one of the places at random and the fun begins. Look up the new travel destination and find out all you can about them. Do they have a traditional dress or dance, what is the national animal, what is a popular dish? Find out all you can and participate by cooking a dish from the destination or learn a traditional dance. Your kids will be world travel experts in no time!
Snail Mail: Engage in the lost art of letter writing. Write letters to relatives, friends, pen pals, or to your future selves.
Bake Shop: Take some time to bake. Baking can be very fun, from preparing the ingredients to stirring the mixture, and then finally to decorating your baking creation. You can bake from scratch of buy something from the store that has fewer steps to follow. Get the kids to help you mix all the ingredients together and once it’s done set up a decorating station to decorate your cake, cupcakes, or cookies!
